'Drop' affirms Meghann Fahy, otherwise yikes
This review might be short. “Drop” is a great example of a movie you kinda want to see in theaters but don’t care enough to actually do it, catch up with on streaming, and forget almost instantly when it ends. It’s neither good nor terrible nor surprising nor remotely believable. See it if you want to, or don’t.
But at least this thriller — in which widowed mom Violet (Meghann Fahy of “The White Lotus,” “The Perfect Couple” and “Sirens”) finally agrees to an in-person date only to become the target of sinister messages on her phone threatening her son at home and her date (Brandon Sklenar) in front of her — confirms that Fahy is plenty capable of anchoring a movie. Violet has a difficult past and a nightmare present, and Fahy pulls off a balancing act that still can’t compensate for a poorly hidden agenda and numerous moments where you can predict not just what will happen but actual lines of dialogue.
Obviously there’s a degree of built-in fun for certain audiences when trying to spot the villain (in this case: who in this fancy restaurant is sending the messages?), and maybe that’s enough for your lazy weeknight or halfhearted date night or whatever. Maybe the plot’s laughable nonsense will make you enjoy it more, not less, especially if you go for stories usually featuring Liam Neeson searching for nefarious people on modes of transportation. To me “Drop” started as a decent-enough, nutrient-free hangover meal that was then dropped on the floor, and no one felt like picking it up.
